irony
Irony is like when you say the opposite of what you really mean, and it’s funny or surprising. Imagine it’s a hot day, and you say, ‘What a nice cool day!’ when you’re sweating. You’re not really saying it’s cool; you’re just joking because it’s so hot. That’s irony!
Another way to think about irony is when something happens that you didn’t expect, and it’s kind of funny. Like if a fire station burns down. Fire stations are supposed to stop fires, so when one catches fire, it’s surprising and a bit funny. That’s irony too!
Irony can also be like when you do something to avoid a problem, but you end up causing it instead. Picture trying to keep your ice cream from melting by putting it in the sun, thinking the sun will keep it cold. But the sun makes it melt faster! That’s ironic because you wanted to stop it from melting, but you did the opposite.
